December 2013 Summary Part 1

Well, I decided on the summary route. I'll post the "display" picture for each box with a little summary of what's in it/my reaction. And I want to point out, I don't plan to do it this way again. It's just because I'm feeling really sick and I'm so behind. Next month will resume normal posts.

Wantable

This included:
Overall, I mostly liked what I got. When the sent out the email saying that Starlooks was a featured brand this month, I didn't initially want any, since I already get their subscription and I worried there would be possible dupes. Luckily, I didn't get anything I already had. I'm not a huge fan of the eye pencil because it's not a hugely flattering color, but the shadow makes a good base color. The Girlactik shadow is awesome, just like the shimmer powder I got last month. The La Bella Donna eyeliner pen seems pretty good. I'm kind of overloaded on black liners though. I switched up my profile a bit for next month to try to avoid getting more. The bonus item isn't a bad size, but kind of reminds me of hotel soap. The value of this box was $66. More than the box cost, but a tad low. I did only get 4 full size items though. I still like Wantable though.

Julep Monthly Box

I upgraded to the full collection which included 9 polishes (I added on one more), the Neutral Eye Palette, their Blank Canvas Mattifying Eye Primer, and a set of Twistband hair ties as the bonus (bah). I really like most of the polishes (that's why I upgraded!), but I think my favorites are Joelle and Shoshanna because of the holographic glitters. I think they look better with at least 3 coats though - Julep's swatches don't do them justice. The eye primer isn't bad and I was super happy with the palette. The colors are really soft, almost creamy (even though they're pressed powder), and nicely pigmented. I hope they make more palettes! I was very happy with my box.

Julep Naughty and Nice Mystery Box
Just to note, I added on the mystery add on (I think it was the Kajal liner and 3 of the polishes) and also bought their Eyes All Aglow set (I had a 40% off coupon - I figured why not? I got everything for only $31!) They just all came in the same box, so I took a picture of everything. The Eyes All Aglow set is fantastic. Mini liners, but I love, love the colors. Sparkly and very soft and smooth!
Of the polishes, 4 were new to me (first set of swatches) - I like Aviva and Brenda, but I'm not so sure about the other 2. The other 5 are dupes and are now in my swap list. Those are in the second swatch picture. The Kajal liner, part of the mystery add-on, was a dupe, but I love it, so I'm keeping it (swatched on the bottom of the last picture)! The mystery box also included a tube of their lip gloss in Timeless (keep), a 1 oz Rock Star Hand Cream (dupe and I just arranged a trade for it!), a 1 oz Blank Canvas Face Primer (keep), a set of Green Tea Blotting Papers (dupe), 2 foil packets of Luxe Repair (dupe), and 2 foil packets of Luxe Care hand cream (keep). A mixed box, but not bad for $31.

Square Hue
I tried to resist, but in the end caved and got Square Hue this month. It came with a glossy red, a pearlescent white, and a GORGEOUS silver holo! The holo makes it worth it! Love it.

Phone Case of the Month
This is a cute case and I like it better than last month's for sure, but I still kinda would prefer something a bit girlier. I guess it's easier to make everything gender neutral if they have a big subscription base and don't have time to see if the subscriber is a man or woman, but I've seen some very pretty cases. I think I'm giving them one more month.

Glossybox

My MIL gifted me a 6 month subscription to Glossybox, which was very sweet! This month we got:
  • Anatomicals You Need a Blooming Shower shower gel ($3.39) - huge product! I'm not a huge rose scent lover though. Probably trading this.
  • Michael Todd Pumpkin Mask ($10) - I got one of these from Ipsy, which I haven't gotten to try yet. Whether I like that one or not decides whether this stays or goes.
  • Ardency Inn Liquid Eyeliner ($19) - Full size! As I said above, I like black liquid eyeliner, but I have soo many. I'll keep this, but I really don't need any more!
  • Nails Inc Victoria Polish ($9.50) - Unlike earlier this year, when we got a mini Nails Inc from Glossybox, this one is full size! Unfortunately, it looks a lot like Julep's Coco, so I don't think I'm going to keep it. I didn't swatch it to be sure, but the pictures online look pretty similar.
  • Naobay Oxygenating Cream ($26.14) - Absorbs quickly and smells nice. Definitely a keeper. I kinda wish we got the original packaging though! Cute!
Overall value $68.03! Not bad! I'm pretty happy with the variety, too! My only complaint for Glossybox is that I can't merge this gift subscription with my old account or move my Glossydots over so that I don't lose those Glossydots!

Well, I'm spent for now. I'll continue with the other 6 tomorrow. I do technically have 2 others (Citrus Lane and Kiwi Crate) that aren't even open yet, but they're Emily's and she's a bit overloaded from Christmas, so I'm saving them for next month. I may or may not review those 2 since they'll be old news by then, haha.

Glossybox November 2013 Review

With Emily's birthday coming up very soon, I'm trying to at least finish up November's reviews before Friday/the weekend because things will be very busy then! So, moving on to Glossybox! For $21/month, you get 5 deluxe-sized beauty samples. Occasionally, you get full sized items. It's a great sub because you get to try some higher-end brands. November's theme was Holiday Romance.

First Peek
The first product I pulled out was a 2 oz size bottle of Mastey Color Protecting Leave-In Oil Treatment ($25). Wow, already surpassed the box value! I do like that this is safe for color treated hair and doesn't contain any of the big questionable ingredients like parabens. I also like that it's good for protecting hair from heat damage and helps hair dry faster since I'm back to straightening my hair now that it's not 100% humidity everyday. That being said, I must have 5 different argan oils, so this doesn't really seem that different to me. I'll use it eventually, but only after I get through the other 4.
Mastey Color Protecting Leave-In Oil Treatment
Next up was a 1.8 oz bottle of The Aloe Source Jojoba Radiance Cleansing Polish ($8.06). Another product free of questionable ingredients (sulfate), this is supposed to be a gentle exfoliator. I'll definitely give this one a try.
The Aloe Source Jojoba Radiance Cleansing Polish
Another face product we got this month was a .17 oz sample of Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream ($18.70). I don't love the smell of it, but it's supposed to stimulate cell regeneration to make your skin smoother and younger looking. Sounds good to me, so I'll definitely try it. Hopefully, I won't love it - the full size is $220. Eek.
Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream
My last 2 products went together: a Nicka K Eyeshadow Round Brush ($4.99) and a full size Emite Makeup Micronized Eye Shadow in the color Dams ($26.13). Another brush for my collection - no complaints there. I'm glad I have the eyeshadow because I don't think I have a plain black for blending, but it's matte, which isn't my favorite. The pigmentation is nice though.

Overall, once again, I'm pretty happy with the new things I get to try from Glossybox. And a couple brands I've never tried, so that's nice! Only one item, the hair treatment, was somewhat of a dupe item (ok, I guess the brush is too, but I love brushes, so I don't care!), but maybe it'll surprise me and be awesome and somehow better than the others I have. The overall value of this box was a whopping $82.88! Great value for a $21 box!

Glossybox October 2013 Review

Glossybox, which usually comes very near the end of the month, shipped and arrived about a week and a half early this month! I don't know why it happened, but it was a nice surprise! For $21/month, you get 5 deluxe-sized beauty samples. Occasionally, you get full sized items. It's a great sub because you get to try some higher-end brands. October's box didn't have a regular theme, but was a collaboration box with Byrdie, which I had never heard of, but is apparently a beauty blog/website. Their collaboration boxes are usually pretty good though, so I was hopeful!
Like all collaboration boxes, this one was not their standard pink box.
Opening the box
The first product I spied was a full size tube of Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Mascara ($23). This promises it "lengthens, curls and magnifies for an intensified look proven to increase lash volume by 752% instantly". Seems like a weird number, but if it does what it says and gives me an intense long, voluminous look, I'll be super happy! I'm usually a sucker for interesting packaging, but I don't like this packaging. I thought at first it was a case that held the tube, which would've been cool, if not a little bit frivolous, but turns out it's the tube itself. It's bulky and kind of gets in the way. The brush is different than any I've seen before. It has 2 sides with different types of bristles - 1 softer, dense side to add volume, and 1 firmer, sparser side to separate and add length. The difference is easy to see in the sample they provide to explain the brush, but when it's coated in mascara, it's not as easy to see. Thankfully, using their tip to brush it lightly against the tube, you can feel a difference. Hopefully the mascara's great! EDIT: I used this tonight and it's easy to get too much product on your lashes with this brush. It really needs to be wiped off well. Plus, the firmer side didn't really separate as promised - it just added more product and made my lashes thicker and more coated. The results were ok when I tried again being a bit more careful about how much product was on the brush, but I've seen better.
Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Mascara
The other makeup product in the box was a full size tube of Balance Me Shine On Tinted Lip Salve in the color Super Soft Beige (~$19.43). Expensive lip gloss! Glossybox has it listed at $16.50, but links to the Balance Me site to buy it, which is where I got the price. I used Google to change the money from pounds to dollars, so I'm not sure why the discrepancy. Anyway, it doesn't look like this comes in any other colors, but that's ok. When I initially saw it, I was like, "eeeh, brown...", but it's very sheer, so it turned out to be just fine! It's very wet feeling at first, but it isn't sticky at all and seems to soak in a bit with time. I liked it.

Swatch of the lip salve
Next up was a deluxe sample of Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream ($12.60). This is supposed to be super hydrating and reduce signs of aging. It smells like cucumbers, which isn't my favorite scent, but it's not terrible. I really like getting these nice deluxe samples of face creams. I don't know which box sent it to me (I think either Glossybox or New Beauty Test Tube), but I discovered my new favorite cream - Osmotics Blue Copper 5 - from a deluxe box sample that actually lasted long enough for me to try it for several weeks. You really need at least a week to see if it works well with your skin. Sometimes I don't have an irritated reaction for several days if a product isn't good for me, but you wouldn't be able to tell with a foil packet.
Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream
Our next deluxe sample was a really adorable bottle of Bvlgari Eau Parfumee Au The Vert (~$7.75). Again, it's nice to see a deluxe sample rather than the standard mini vial - and what a cute bottle! The scent isn't bad, but it's not my favorite. I think I could wear it if I was in the mood for something different than my usual taste, but that's not terribly often. It's apparently unisex and is considered a "Citrus Aromatic Floral" with notes of Italian bergamot, pepper, and green tea.
Bvlgari Eau Parfumee Au The Vert
My last item appears to have been slightly variable for people. Some people got a Sesha Skin Therapy Renu  Exfoliating Gel that sounds really cool and I kind of wish I got, and others, like me, got a Sesha Rejuvenating Anti-Wrinkle Mask ($9). I'm assuming I got the mask because I think in my profile I might've said my only skin concern is preventing signs of aging or something like that - this product bluntly states on the package "For Mature Skin". I'm not really sure I'm old enough for that designation yet. Anyway, this mask is a one time use mask that is supposed to make your skin look younger.

October 2013 Glossybox
I don't think this was a bad box, but nothing has really wowed me so far in it. I was initially very excited about the mascara, but it was a bit of a let down. The lip salve is good and I'll definitely try everything else, but eh. For a collaboration, I'm not as impressed as usual. The overall value of this box was $71.78, which is great. I just wish it were things I was a little more excited about. Last month spoiled me.

If you get Glossybox, did you get anything different? Did you get that exfoliating gel? Is it awesome? If you'd like to sign up, here's my link. Again, the link at the top is a non-referral link if you'd prefer.

Glossybox September 2013 Review

Two more boxes for September! Jeez, you go on vacation and these don't just write themselves while you're gone? :P

After being a member with Glossybox for a while - I think my first box was some time in the summer of 2012 - I finally amassed enough Glossydots (reward points you get for reviewing your products or referring people) to get a free box!! And what a free box it was. The theme for September was "All you need for fall".
Opening the box
Info card
Glossybox had sent, I think, 2 product reveals prior to shipping, so I knew it would be pretty good before it even came. The first big product was a FULL SIZE Nioxin Diamax hair treatment ($50!). (Ok, so technically, full size is 3.4 oz, while ours says 3.38 oz, so they seem to be slightly different bottles, but for all intents and purposes, it's full size.). I'm pretty thrilled with such a highly priced full item. And though I haven't had a chance to try it yet, it sounds like something I'd like. You add it to damp hair and it gives you fuller, stronger hair! My hair is very long, but can tend to be a bit flat after, well, flat ironing it. I'm hoping with this, it'll be a bit fuller even after flat ironing.
Nioxin Diamax Hair Treatment
Next up was a large sample of BCBGMAXAZRIA Bon Genre perfume. The amount isn't marked and I'm usually pretty terrible at estimating amounts, but based on some of my other marked perfumes in a similar shape, I'd guess this is about .5 oz, so this is valued at approximately $11.03. I'm usually somewhat wary of perfume samples, especially designer ones. I love simpler indie ones, but I'm just not a designer perfume wearer. They just tend to smell too fancy for me, haha. However, this one smells pretty good! I'll actually use it! The description lists lychee, red berries, black pepper, bergamot, jasmine noir, tuberose, cardamom, tiger-lily, amber, Australian sandalwood, patchouli, and black vanilla. I know I like vanilla, but I can't really put my finger on what I specifically like in this scent. I do really like that it's not your typical subscription box teeny perfume sample - especially since it's a scent I like!

My next item was a full size Oceane Makeup Remover Pen ($5.30). I'm not entirely sure of that value. I have no idea where that site is from and don't recognize $R as a currency - based on the .br in the address, I guessed Brazil and when I converted 8,58 to US currency, it was $3.93. But, since I'm not sure I'm right even about origin, we'll stick with the Glossybox value. Anyway, I'm super excited about this product. You use it to erase little mistakes as you put on makeup. This will make it much easier to get rid of under-eye shadow fallout smudges, weird eyeliner mistakes, and mascara smudges! Love it!
Oceane Makeup Remover Pen
Next was a really nice Emite Makeup eyelash curler ($30.89). I have a small plastic travel eyelash curler that I got from Julep as a bonus in one of my first few months, but I haven't had a real eyelash curler in ages. I don't even know what happened to the one cheap one I had. But this one doesn't feel cheap at all! It's really sturdy and feels nice in my hands. And it comes with replacement rubber pieces. This is another huge hit with me. Love it!

The last item was a full size Be a Bombshell eyeliner pen in Onyx ($14). As I noted in September's Lip Factory post, where I got one of these in Amethyst, I already have this in this exact color. But I do like it, so I don't mind having this as a backup. It's not my favorite liquid eyeliner, since it tends to take a few sweeps to get the darkness I like, but it's easy to use.

September 2013 Glossybox
I am SOO happy with this Glossybox. Even more so that this was my free reward box! All these full size products, with a value of $111.22 for free! I like everything in it. Awesome.

If you get Glossybox, did you get anything different? I'm not sure that there was any variation in September - maybe the Be a Bombshell product? If you'd like to sign up, here's my link. If anyone signs up with my link, I get 200 Glossydots, which I'd be super thankful for! Again, the link at the top is a non-referral link if you'd prefer.

Glossybox August 2013 Review

Another month, another Glossybox! For $21/month, you get 5 deluxe-sized beauty samples. Occasionally, you get full sized items. It's a great sub because you get to try some higher-end brands. August's theme was "Bohemian Summer", I guess the last of their summer themes. I usually start with my "opening the box" picture, but this was sitting on top of the box, so I figured I'd show this first: a coupon for Guess and a jean makeup bag. This seemed odd since I've never seen them just put random coupons and items outside of the inner box.

The first product I pulled out was a full size Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush (~$18.77). I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure what color I got. It's not written on the tube or the card and when I go to the link, I think it's probably Marshmallow Pink, but it kind of looks a bit darker. But not as dark as Cranberry. <shrug> Anyway, I didn't swatch this because honestly, I'm not sure I want to open it. I want to try it because, like the Starbox showed me, sometimes I can be surprised by a lipstick, but I'm fairly certain it won't work out and I'd almost rather leave it sealed to give it away. I don't know.
Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush
Next up was a ModelCo eyeshadow duo in Bronzed Goddess ($25). Funny enough, this doesn't appear to be available own it's on on the ModelCo website. Just in the All About Eyes Bronzed Goddess set, which comes with a liner and a mascara. I think I've even gotten those other 2 items from Glossybox. I wonder if they just got a bunch of those sets and sent out the parts individually. I think I even remember a Glossybox sign on deal that included this exact product as the bonus. Anyway, sadly, mine arrived somewhat damaged. It looked like it had been dropped, but thankfully, the pigments are actually very soft so I was able to pack the damaged one back into the pan and press it down to mostly fix it. Hopefully it will hold up to further crumbling. The colors are highly pigmented and actually very pretty, so assuming it holds up ok, I'm happy with it.
ModelCo Eyeshadow Duo in Bronzed Goddess
A bit messy, but this is midway through tidying the beigey-gold color
Swatch of the ModelCo Eyeshadow duo
My next product was a full size Anatomicals Spray Misty For Me Facial Spritz (~$9.30). It's supposed to rehydrate and refresh your skin. I tried it, but I'm not sure I noticed much of any effect other than feeling like I just sprayed my face with water. It does smell pretty nice, though.
Anatomicals Spray Misty For Me Facial Spritz
Next, was a nice size tub of Novex Brazilian Keratin Hair Care Treatment Cream. Glossybox calls this full size at 3.5 oz ($4.99), but the only tub I can find available for purchase is a 35.3 oz tub ($19.39), so I'm valuing this at $1.93. It's still a nice size, though! Perhaps a little industrial looking in the packaging - I kind of feel like I'd find this at Lowe's in the paint section - but it gets ok reviews, so I'll definitely try it.
Novex Brazilian Keratin Hair Care Treatment Cream
My last product was a full size Sue Devitt Triple C-Weed Pressed Powder ($28). I got the color Quiet and Still, for the palest people. I was thrilled that for once I got a color other than bronze or dark. Alas, it still didn't match. Surprisingly enough, this one is actually too light (it appears almost white). Apart from the color mismatch, it seems like a nice powder, but the sponge provided is a bit too thin.

August 2013 Glossybox
I was really pleased with the number of full size products in this month's box. This box had a value of $83! I just wish they all worked out. But such is the way of the subscription box - it won't always all work out for you. Happily, I finally earned my free box with Glossydots, so September will be free!! Yippee!

If you get Glossybox, did you get anything different? In the list of items for this month, I did see a nail polish and an Airelle product. Since If you'd like to sign up, here's my link. If anyone signs up with my link, I get 200 Glossydots, which I'd be super thankful for! Again, the link at the top is a non-referral link if you'd prefer.
